John 7:37-39 (NRSV)
On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was- standing there, he cried out, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me,- and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said,- 'Out of the believer's heart shall flow rivers of living water.'" Now- he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive;- for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the- free gift of the water of life.
-- Revelation 22:17 (NIV)-
SITTING in parched soil, my plant struggled to survive. Once again I- had neglected to water it, yet it was still alive! As I went to get- my watering can, I reflected on how people can sometimes be like that- plant.
Without sufficient water, the plant showed little growth. Its leaves- were limp; they looked lifeless. As I watered the plant, the thought- struck me that without the living water of Jesus Christ, a person can- still exist; but there is little growth, and life cannot be abundant.
Jesus came to give us abundant life, but often we settle for mere- existence. When we immerse ourselves in prayer, Bible study,- Christian fellowship, and serving others, we can experience the growth- and abundant life that Jesus has promised.
Just as we are drawn to the beauty of a healthy, thriving plant,- others will be drawn to the vitality of Christ living in us. Then we- can share with others the living water that Christ says will flow from- within us, and we will truly be alive!
Prayer: O Lord, help us to stop settling for mere existence. We want- your living water to flow through us and from us. May it be so.- Amen.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Am I living abundantly or merely existing?
Those who feel that life has no meaning
