Well-known English teacher to Chinese people worldwide Doris Brougham, fondly known as Teacher Peng Meng-hu, received two prestigious National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) awards – International Individual Outstanding Award and Milestone Award – at the NRB Convention and Exposition held from February 26th thru March 1st.

Brougham left her home town Seattle, Washington, and traveled by boat to China as a missionary. After witnessing the Chinese civil war, she traveled to Taiwan in 1951. Ever since then she has been sharing God’s love in Asia for over 60 years. In 1960, she founded Overseas Radio Inc. (ORI) in 1960, which became Overseas Radio and Television, Inc. (ORTV) when television came to Taiwan in 1962. In 1962, she published the first English-learning magazine Studio Classroom with the hope of opening more doors for the sake of the gospel.

By the grace of God and Brougham relentless efforts, Studio Classroom has evolved from a simple black and white text book to three magazines that are accompanied by television and broadcasting programs. This program today is being broadcasted all over the world and viewed by more than one million people through the television, radio broadcasts, and the internet.

Under Brougham, Overseas Radio and Television (ORTV) has grown into an international Christian media organization with more than 250 employees. She continues to teach, produce, write, edit, consult, and speak. With her guidance, ORTV has helped many Christian organizations and individuals across the globe.

In Taiwan and various areas around the world, her work for the gospel and the contributions made towards English education has been widely recognized and praised. She has also received NRB awards in the past for being an excellent outstanding broadcasting producer. The NRB staffs each gave their blessings after presenting Brougham with the awards this year.

“Doris Brougham heard the call of God and stepped out in faith to bring the Gospel to the other side of the globe,” said NRB President & CEO Dr. Frank Wright. “Five decades later, she still is actively ministering with a willing heart.”

“Dr. Doris Brougham is an educator, innovator, and humble servant for Christ. Her dedication to the Chinese speaking people has been amazing, and her work through ORTV, established over 50 years ago, shows the power of God through an individual...a willing servant of the Lord Jesus,” said Dr. Ron Harris, NRB Senior Vice President for Strategic Partnerships. “Overseas Radio and TV is a powerful tool straight from the heart of Doris Brougham.”

The International Individual Achievement Award is presented to a non-U.S. resident/citizen who demonstrates a strong personal commitment to proclaiming Christ through electronic media, working with integrity and faithfulness to influence a culture for Christ; Milestone Award is given to those with exemplary service in Christian broadcasting for 50 years or more. NRB desires to honor the industry pioneers who brought Christian communications to the place of respect and achievement it enjoys today.

NRB is a non-partisan, international association of Christian communicators whose member organizations represent millions of listeners, viewers and readers. Their mission is to keep the doors of electronic media open for the spread of the Gospel. In addition to promoting standards of excellence, integrity, and accountability, NRB provides networking, educational, ministry, and fellowship opportunities for its members.
