Help Sent 2000 Needy Students to School in Sept. with New School Supplies

Jul 19, 2011 02:32 PM EDT

Beginning from July 23rd to September 6th, Salvation Army has set the goal to support 2000 kids with a brand new backpack full of all the necessary school supplies.

Each September should present every child with a fresh start to a successful school year. Unfortunately, there are many families who simply can’t afford the steep cost of purchasing a long list of required school supplies for their children.

Through The Salvation Army along with supporting partners, Fitness Town, Staples, Starbucks and media sponsors, 24 Hour News, CKNW and Rock 101, children throughout the lower mainland will be able to go to school with the necessary tools needed in order to have a successful year.

Every year in British Columbia, The Salvation Army provides thousands of children with a brand new backpack full of much‐needed school supplies to start the year. And in the few years they have seen an increase in families coming for support.

"In the last two years, we have seen the demand increase for our backpack program almost twofolds," says Major Ken Ritson, Director of The Salvation Army Vancouver Family Services.

Two ways to help:

1. Drop off new school supplies and backpacks at Starbucks locations in Vancouver proper, and at Fitness Town locations throughout the lower mainland.

2. Make a financial donation at participating Staples locations in Greater Vancouver.
