Russia figure skating duo Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov win the gold medal in pairs figure skating Wednesday, the world champion pairs laid down stunning routines with a total score of 236.86. Skating to "Jesus Christ Superstar," they had a few small bobbles. But with a lead after a near-flawless short program and the difficulty of their elements, they knew when they finished the program without any big mistakes that gold was in their grasp.

The two Russian pairs also won gold in the team event.

Another Russian pair, Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov, 2014 European silver medalists, took the silver medal with a score of 143.47 in the free skate and a total score of 218.68.

Four-time world champions Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy of Germany had to settle for bronze for the second straight Olympics. Two falls in their free skate dropped them to an unexpected bronze medal, with a score of 215.78.

Chinese veterans Pang Qing and Tong Jian, silver medallists in 2010 Vancouver Olympics, finished in fourth in their final competition before retiring

The top American team Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir placed ninth with a great overall performance in the free skate, they scored 187.82 in the 16-pair field while another America team, Felicia Zhang and Nathan Bartholomay, ended the competition in 12th position with a score of 167.21.
