Elementary Season 3 will see a great shift in the overall storyline, as well as adding new characters. Here is a brief rundown of what to expect when CBS airs the third season on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 10/9c.

Storyline Jumps Forward by a Year

Based on the latest information, Season 3 picks up a year after events in the previous season.

In the previous season finale, Sherlock Holmes (Johnny Lee Miller) accepts an offer to work for the British MI6 spy agency. His companion Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) moves out of Brownstone, the investigative duo's home-base. Even so, Joan will be returning in the third season.

Sherlock's brother Mycroft (Rhys Ifans) fakes his own death, and goes into hiding under NSA protective custody. It remains to be seen if the older Holmes will appear later in Season 3, though it seems unlikely.

Addiction is a topic that is explored to great lengths on the show. For the first two seasons, Sherlock pretty much has his heroin addiction under control. However, Mycroft and Watson's departure sends him into a downward emotional spiral. Near the end of the finale, Sherlock puts a small packet of heroin in his pocket. Will he have a relapse?

Flash forward to a year, Sherlock returns to New York where he runs into former partner Watson. Holmes will also reconnect with Captain Gregson (Aidan Quinn) and Marcus Bell (Jon Michael Hill) at the New York City Police Department.

An Independent Joan Watson

Joann has an uneasy relationship with Sherlock, even though their partnership is effective at solving mysterious crimes. She starts off as Sherlock's sober companion, but later becomes his apprentice when her contract ends.

Watson demonstrates a talent for deduction, though she is initially reluctant to admit it. As the series progresses, she finds her confidence, and even solves a number of Sherlock's cold cases. Eventually, Watson starts missing her previous social life. After an ill-fated tryst with Mycroft, Joan finds herself a new apartment. She leaves behind a distraught Sherlock, whom has grown reliant on her presence.

When Sherlock returns to New York, he finds Watson working as an independent investigator. Even so, the both of them will collaborate on solving yet another murder mystery in Season 3.

Detective Gregson Has a Daughter in the Police Force

On Thursday, Aug. 14, TV Line revealed that episode 5 will introduce Captain Gregson's ambitious daughter. Like her father, she joins the police force -- where she rapidly moves up the ranks.

There is no information about this character at this time. Also, Elementary showrunners have yet to confirm who will be starring in this role.

Sherlock Adopts a New Protégé

Sherlock will bring a long a new apprentice named Kitty (Ophelia Lovibond), when he returns to New York. Not much is known about Kitty, apart from the fact that she develops a strong rivalry with Joan Watson. This information was first confirmed last month in a report by TV Line.

In real life, Lovibond has acted in TV shows that include Titanic: Blood and Steel and Mr. Sloanne. The British actress also starred in movies including No Strings Attached, Nowhere Boy, Thor: The Dark World, and Mr. Popper's Penguins. Later this year, she will be appearing in the highly-anticipated Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy.
