Google may be working on the Nexus 6 and Nexus 8, as recent developments suggest that the Android Silver may have been scrapped.
Nexus fans will definitely be pleased with the rumored cancellation. A number of rumors suggested that Android Silver was to replace the entire Nexus series of smartphones and tablets. After Arora resigned, the Android Silver program immediately went into jeopardy. With Silver gone, Google will more than likely keep the Nexus brand alive.
News of the Android Silver postponement first broke out over at The Information on Tuesday, Sept. 16. Said to be the brainchild of Google's Chief Business Officer Nikesh Arora, Android Silver may have been Google's latest attempt at reining in control over its Android OS. Current Android models vary between the different device manufacturers.
In contrast, Apple uses a unified iOS operating system that is consistent across all mobile platforms. This has allowed the Cupertino-based company to push out software changes more effectively.
Naturally, Google has never officially confirmed the existence of Android Silver. So, the program may be headed toward a silent death. For now, Nexus-related tech gossip has mainly focused on the fabled Nexus 6 and Nexus 8 mobile devices.
Earlier in September, BrightSideofNews allegedly discovered a legal letter mentioning the "HTC Nexus 9" by name. The letter was part of a recent Nvidia lawsuit against Samsung and Qualcomm. A number of observers argue that the Nexus 9 is possibly an alternate name for the Nexus 8.
Back in late July, Android Police reported that Motorola was cooperating with Google on a Nexus device codenamed Shamu. Google does not directly manufacturer any of its phones, and outsources production to outside sources. Many observers believe that Shamu is in actuality the Nexus 6.
There is still no confirmation regarding when Google will release the Nexus 6 and Nexus 8. Both mobile devices will respectively replace the aging Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 design. Even so, there is still the possibility that either of the two rumored devices will be announced later this year.
Google has a habit of announcing new products just weeks before release. For instance, the Nexus 5 was formally introduced in late Oct. 2013, and was released the following November. Based on this record, consumers will have to wait until October this year to see if Google is coming with the Nexus 6 or Nexus 8.
