Android 5.1 Lollipop Release Date Update for LG G3 and G2; LG G4 Release Date

May 13, 2015 01:46 AM EDT

LG's U.S. release date for the G4 may be coming this summer. Currently, the G4 is only available in LG's home nation of South Korea. Meanwhile, the LG G3 and G2 are awaiting the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop update. As of now, both devices are running on the earlier Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system.

LG G4 North American Release Date Fast Approaching

On April 29, the LG G4 was launched the same day it was revealed in South Korea. In the meanwhile, the U.S. and European release date remains elusive. However, TechRadar reports that the LG G4 will start shipping across the Pacific anywhere between late-May and early-June. Provided this prediction is accurate, this means the U.S. release date may be this summer. However, the source of this information remains anonymous.

Even so, it is more than likely that the LG G4 will be available to North American consumers within this year. Meanwhile, the LG G4 is undergoing trials with the U.S. market.  Upon release, the device is expected to compete with the Apple iPhone 6, Samsung S6, HTC One M9, and Sony Xperia Z4.

One feature for the G4 is its removable leather battery cover to allow users to easily swap out the battery. This is notable because many manufacturers have opted to keep the battery compartment inaccessible to users. The cover comes in brown, black, red, sky blue, beige, and yellow.

Consumers who dislike the leather back can opt for a conventional smooth plastic cover instead. The alternate covers come in metallic black or gold. There is also a third option that comes in white ceramic.

Another notable feature for the LG G4 is its f/1.8 aperture camera. This feature allows the device to capture images in lowlight situations. Even so, images remain crisp due to the G4's 0.6 second shutter speed. LG has taken a further step by upgrading the G4's rear camera to 16 megapixels. In contrast, the LG G3 has a 13-megapixel camera.

LG G3 and G2 Android 5.1 Update Still Pending

In the mean time, LG has yet to announce when the G3 and G2 is getting the current Android 5.1 Lollipop update.

LG G3 owners have the option to install the Android 5.1 Lollipop through CyanogenMod CM12.1. However, the process is long and complicated. Also, one wrong move may result in permanent damage to the device. Average G3 users are encouraged to wait for the official Android 5.1 Lollipop update for the G3 and G2.

The Android 5.1 fixes a number of issues associated with earlier Lollipop updates. Those waiting to buy the LG G4 will be pleased to know that the device comes preinstalled with Android 5.1 Lollipop.
