The BET Awards are an annual event by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate African Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports, as well as other fields. It is set up with a voting academy made up of 500 people from the music industry, not to mention media and bloggers. According to the official BET awards site, the featured performers include Kendrick Lamar, Ne-Yo, Meek Mill, Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, Ciara, Tamar Braxton, Jason DeRulo, K. Michelle, Tinashe, Janelle Monae, Future, Anthony Hamilton, Donnie McClurkin, Robin Thicke, Tyga, E-40, Omarion, Gary Clark Jr., Fetty Wap, Tori Kelly, Jidenna, and Silento. Honorees will be Tom Joyner, Janet Jackson, and Smokey Robinson, who will also be performing that night. The cast of the hit show Empire will also make an appearance, and hosting the event will be Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross.
For those who aren't familiar with the BET awards, they have many categories such as Best New International Artist, Best International Act UK, Best International Act Africa, Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, Best Group, Best Collaboration, Best Male Hip Hope Artist, Best Female Hip Hop Artist, Video of the Year, Video Director of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Gospel Artist, Best Actress, Best Actor, Youngstars Award, Best Movie, Sportswoman of the Year, and Sportsman of the Year. There are also two awards unique to BET which include the Coca-Cola Viewers Choice Award which allows people at home to vote for their favorite, and the Centric Award for artists that uniquely "embody the spirit of soul".
As for BET 2015 awards predictions, there are many, but a recent forum on Gold Derby has revealed many common predictions. Most point to Nicki Minaj as winning best female Hip Hop Artist. One of the big categories that fans of the BET awards look forward to is the coveted Video of the Year, and it is stiff competition this year with Beyonce with "7/11", Big Sean featuring E-40 with "IDFWU", Christ Brown featuring L'il Wayne and Tyga with "Loyal", Chris Brown featuring Usher and Rick Ross with "New Flame", Common and John Legend with "Glory" (from the motion picture Selma) and Nicki Minaj with "Anaconda".
