The next season of the hugely-popular medical drama series Grey's Anatomy will focus less in romance than the previous seasons as Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) tries to cope with the heart-breaking death of her husband Derek Shepherd a.k.a. McDreamy (Patrick Dempsey).

"So many people lose their spouses in a myriad of different ways and feel they can't get up again and to tell the story of how life goes on after ... that's a story worth telling," Pompei said in an interview.

The actress added that she is approaching Season 12 of Grey's Anatomy with a new challenge on her character and added that playing without Derek would the some of the "best scenes to play" in the upcoming episodes of the new season as she has already been accustomed to playing her part with Dempsey playing as her husband.

Other spoilers for the next installment of the Grey's Anatomy franchise are revelations that more of the characters in the series will change their status to 'single."

According to MNR Daily, Dr. Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) and Dr. April Kepner (Sarah Drew) are likely heading to splitsville as fans eagerly await the fate of their relationship. In the last season, Jackson gave April an ultimatum that he would call it quits if she decides to go ahead with her second tour of duty in Jordan.

But during the recent Grey's Anatomy Television Critics Association press tour, show creator Shonda Rhimes has revealed that April decided to go to Jordan. And if Jackson will stay true with his threat, then we are seeing the end of "Japril" in Season 12.

There are no details if Jackson and April were able to come out with a compromise before the later left for Jordan. But since the next season will be sent three months after the last episode of the last season, fans can expect to see the first episodes of the new installment to show the duo coping.

Also reported to be heading back into the dating scene are Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jesse Capshaw). A report by Wetpaint said the couple will start seeing new couple after their divorce. A certified lesbian, Arizona is expected to start dating other woman, while Callie, a self-confessed bisexual can date both men and women. After all, Callie has been in a relationship with other men before she met Arizona.

Earlier, we reported that Chandra Wilson, who plays the influential doctor Miranda Bailey, promises fans Season 12 of Grey's Anatomy will be full of surprises and excited, following his return to the show after giving birth to a child and a painful divorce. Bailey told Zap2it her return to the show also marks her return to her old and notoriously tough self.

"(You'll see) some self-confidence that you haven't seen in a while from her coming out...It looks like from what I'm reading in the next script, she's across the board giving people a hard time. That's why I'm saying it's some classic Bailey about to come out," she said in the interview.

She went on to say, "I want to be chief. That's what I want. What do I have to do to make that happen? You're going to see some classic Bailey stuff, some classic Bailey behavior."

Grey's Anatomy Season 12 will air at 8 p.m. ET on Sept. 24 on ABC.
