Moto X 2016 (Moto X4) Release Date and Rumors: New Motorola Flagship Could Have Modular Add-ons Just Like LG's G5

Smartphones with modular design could be the future of the mobile industry. Today's reports say the Moto X (2016) would have a metal design and modular backplates. The latter gives added functionality to the device. Here's the latest update about Moto X 2016 release date, specs and price.

By looking at the leaked pictures of Moto X4, one can easily notice the 16 holes on the back of the device. A report from the Verge says these holes are connections pins that allow modular backplates to be snapped onto the handset. It is reported that this year's Moto will have six add-ons that will definitely bring more functionality to the device.  The six new modules are called "Amps" - the Lenovo equivalent of LG's "Friends."

The same source from The Verge reports some of the Moto X4's add-ons are bass-rich stereo speakers, battery pack, a camera grip with flash and optical zoom, and a pico projector. That selection is far wider than LG G5's add-ons - a camera grip and hi-fi DAC speaker.

Furthermore, the add-ons are connected to the Moto X4 magnetically for a tight, secure connection while also allowing for easy removal.

VentureBeat has reported the Moto X 2016 will come in two variants.  The models are called Vertex and Vector Thin. Both of them have 5.5-inch AMOLED displays, but otherwise, their specs are completely different.

The Vector Thin is the top-spec model. It has ultra-clear Quad HD resolution. Under the hood, it is powered with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 system-on-chip. Also, it has 32GB of storage capacity and 4GB of RAM. The device also sports 16-megapixel sensor with laser-assisted and phase detection and autofocus technologies.

For the other variant, Vertex, it only features Full HD display and Snapdragon 625 chip clocked at 2.0GHz. Its camera technology features 13-megapixel snapper and laser auto-focus.

As of now, Lenovo-Motorola has not yet confirmed or denied any of the details above, so let's take it with a grain of salt.

Tech Times suggests the Moto X (2016) or Moto X4 could be revealed in August. If this rumor is accurate, the handset's launching might coincide with Samsung Galaxy Note 6's launching and Apple's September iPhone 7 announcement.  On the other hand, Droid-Life claims Moto X4 will be introduced on June 9th at Lenovo Tech World. Nevertheless, the device will be unveiled this year.
