Voltron: Legendary Defender Season 2 Release Date, Spoilers, and Rumors; Review of Season 1 and Seven Questions that Have to be Answered

Dreamworks and Netflix took a subtle chance to rebooting an anime series known as Voltron, and it has debuted this month to incredibly great reviews.  The show had about 11 episodes for Season 1, and it ended on a cliffhanger that really leads into a Season 2.  Unfortunately, Netflix hasn't cleared a Season 2 as yet, it is pretty clear that there will be one.  This is what is known about Voltron: Legendary Defender Season 2 with Release Date, Spoilers, and Rumors, as well seven questions that need to be addressed.

In case you missed the first season, here is a review of Season 1.  As someone who watched the original eighties anime series, the show took a more serious look, but it had a lot of humor to it.  It featured a group of astronauts who are selected to be a super team in ships of robot lions.  The group includes Red Lion pilot Keith (Steven Yeun), Blue Lion pilot Lance (Jeremy Shada), Green Lion Pilot Pidge (Bex Taylor-Klaus), Yellow Lion Pilot Hunk (Tyler Labine), and Black Lion Pilot Shiro (Josh Keaton).  The group is assisting a Princess named Allura (Kimberly Brooks) along with her assistant Coran (Rhys Darby).

The first episode had the team matched with their individual lion, and it introduced the evil forces led by King Zarkon (Neil Kaplan).  The team then formed their lions into the giant robot Voltron, and a few episodes dealt with the team working together to fight monsters on the world of the Princess' castle.

There was a conflict that happened when the Castle needed a replacement crystal, which resulted in a visit to a world known as Balmera.  Here Hunk met a lady who he kind of fell for, and they revisited that world when the Castle suddenly became a starship.

From there, the group tried to take the fight to Zarkon, but it ended up with Allura getting captured. Fortunately, the squad was able to get Allura back, but then as they took a wormhole home, there was an attack by the enemy.

This leads to a few questions:

1)       Where Will the Team End Up?

At the end of the first season, the castle/ship was getting lost in some kind of hyperspace, and some of the lions were separated as well.  The first episode or a few episodes will have to deal with getting the team back together again.

2)      What happened to Shiro, precisely?

The show went out of its way to give Shiro a backstory about being a prisoner, and then escaping.  There hasn't really been much shown there, but rather told.  Personally, it would be good to see this in a flashback episode.

3)      Will Pidge be reunited with her brother and father?

Pidge almost left the group to try and find her missing brother and father, but realized that she was a valued member of the team.  This was the same episode where her gender was revealed to be female, which is an interesting upgrade from the original show where Pidge was 100 percent little annoying boy.  Hopefully, Pidge's family is still alive, and there will be a reunion.

4)       Is Lunk going to have an interspecies relationship?

Lunk seems to be attracted to a lady on Balmeria, assuming it is a lady.  They seem to dig each other, and there is a huge set-up for this.

5)       Can we do something Lance and Keith?

Lance is hysterical, and he reminds me of Sokka on Avatar: The Last Airbender.   He is definitely the comic relief of the show, but nothing much is happening with him other than that.  The same goes double for Keith, as he doesn't seem to have any real backstory or developed personality.

6)       Why does Zarkon have such great power?

Zarkon seems to have a lot of great power, but where did he get it from?  He has ruled for 10,000 years, so is there some kind of flashback episode that explains how he became the grand tyrant of the universe?  I mean, unless the show isn't going for a sympathetic bad guy.

7)      Where exactly does Voltron come from?

Voltron is this Legendary Defender and the most powerful weapon of the universe, but his origins are very mysterious.  You could easily do a prequel show for this, and if that is part of the plan, I want to hear more about it.

In case you are wondering why I am so sure that the show will have a Season 2, I just looked at Rotten Tomatoes and saw the 100 Percent rating.  Not only that, the show left off on a deliberate cliffhanger, so if it doesn't come back, there will be a lot of disappointed fans.

The issue is that the show is in good hands as the producers of the previously mentioned Avatar: The Last Airbender have done this show.  They are more than capable of delivering an epic story with a lot of humor that appeals to all ages, and fans can only hope that there is a complete long-term plan for this.  There is no word on the Season 2 Release Date, but fans should expect it next summer of 2017.
