The Washington Redskins are reportedly looking to boost its running back bench by bringing back free agent Pierre Thomas. According to rumors, Thomas could serve as the replacement of Matt Jones at the starting position.
Currently, the bench of the Redskins for their running backs is lacking the necessary depth. For now, Jones is their starter with Robert Kelley as his backup. Chris Thompson, on the other hand, is the team's third-string RB.
Although these three are pretty much capable of holding down the Redskins' fort, an unexpected incident such as an injury or suspension could easily threaten the Washington organization's chances at hitting the playoffs.
According to a recent report, this potential problem could force the Redskins to rethink the status of Thomas, who was released by the team earlier this year after the organization decided not to offer him a contract extension.
Getting Thomas back will surely add the necessary depth to the Redskins' running back lineup. Putting Thomas back on the roster could push back Jones' position to a backup role. That's because even though Jones has already shown the Washington franchise what he can do on the field, Thomas is still more experienced that him.
Thomas has been in the NFL since 2007 when he first joined the league with the New Orleans Saints. Aside from his veteran status, he also has experience playing in and winning a Super Bowl.
During the Super Bowl XLIV, which featured a match against the Saints and Indianapolis Colts, Thomas scored the team's first touchdown, helping his team to secure a 31-17 win against their opponents.
Thomas' experience of playing under great pressure could provide Washington the edge it needs this year. Partnering him with Jones, who could step in on Thomas' position whenever necessary, will also give the Redskins the flexibility to quickly adapt their offense depending on the nature of the game.
But then again, there's certainly a reason why the Redskins decided not to renew Thomas' contract with the team. So, if they don't want to bring back Thomas, they still have other options at running back. Some of these include Karlos Williams, David Cobb, Ahmed Bradshaw and Donald Brown.
