The 2017 Grammy Awards nominations are officially out after being announced Tuesday morning, and many of the music industry’s biggest and brightest artists are set to go head-to-head once more to take these honors.
Beyoncé bagged nine Grammy nominations for her latest album, ‘Lemonade.’ Already winning 20 Grammys in the past years, the pop diva was recognized this time under major categories, such as song of the year, record of the year, and album of the year.
Her number of nominations is closely followed by those of Drake, Kanye West and Rihanna, who each have eight nods.
Adele bagged five nominations for her ’25’ album. The English singer-songwriter previously raked in 10 Grammy wins. This year, she will have to go head-to-head with Beyoncé, Drake, Justin Bieber and Sturgill Simpson for album of the year.
Breakout artist Chance the Rapper, who picked up seven total nominations, landed on the new artist category and will duke it out with Anderson Paak, Maren Morris, Kelsey Ballerino and the Chainsmokers.
Amy Schumer earned two nominations for comedy album and spoken-word album for her book’s audio version. Netflix hit ‘Stranger Things’ also raked in two nominations for its score.
Frank Ocean, who was expected by many to have picked up several nods, is absent in this year’s list of Grammy nominations. His album ‘Blonde’ was not passed in prior to the September 30 deadline.
“That institution certainly has nostalgic importance,” Ocean told the New York Times in November. “It just doesn’t seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down.”
West spoke up about Ocean’s absence, saying that he would boycott the awards show if the latter was not nominated in any category.
“The album I listen to the most this year is Frank Ocean’s album. I’ll tell you this right now, if his album is not nominated in no categories, I’m not showing up to the Grammys,” West said. “As artists, we’ve got to come together to fight the b*******.”
David Bowie also bagged posthumous nominations in five categories, such as best rock performance and best rock song. Last year, Lady Gaga's performance had been a special tribute to the late singer.
The 2017 Grammy Awards will be hosted by James Corden on February 12. The complete list of Grammy nominations is as follows.
