Clash of Clans December Update and Sneak Peeks: Shields, Village Guard, and Personal Break System

Those still waiting for the cauldrons and pumpkins in Clash of Clans to turn into something more seasonally related probably know by now that there are updates in the works.  The last couple of days there have been some sneak peeks into the new release, which Supercell is hinting at to be out on or around December 7th. Shields, personal breaks, and Village Guard are among the changes players will see in the next update.

The first two sneak peeks were revealed on the Supercell Clash of Clans forum yesterday.  The first part was about attacking and defending.  According to the developers, they are making changes to gameplay to make things fairer and to encourage more attacking.

As it stands right now, players who want to farm more to save their elixir and gold, can place their town halls on the outside of their walls so that people will attack those, giving them an automatic shield- saving them from losing more gold and elixir.

Supercell is also encouraging people to bring in their town halls now.  It will now take thirty percent destruction of the village to get a 12-hour shield, 60% destruction for a 14-hour shield, and 90 percent for a 16-hour shield.  To get a shield, though, the attacker needs to use at least 50 percent of their army.

One of the ways Clash of Clans is encouraging its players to attack is by allowing them to attack when their shield is up.  Currently, a player has to wait to attack until their shield goes down, or they will lose the shield and risk getting attacked.  In the new update, the ability to attack with a shield will only cost three hours of a shield- gradually increasing in cost each time a player attacks.  It will not cost any shield time to browse through villages to see if there are good attack options (it will still cost gold, though).  This new update should be a benefit to village owners who don't get a chance to attack before they are attacked and their shields automatically go up.  More information is available on the video below.

The second part of the update sneak peek is a new thing called, "Village Guard."  Village Guard is the ability to prevent attacks on a village while its shield is down.  It is pretending that a player is still online while they close the game or get disconnected.

Free Village Guard time automatically is given when shields expire.  It will last between 15 minutes to 3 hours depending on the league a player is in.  Two hours of extra Village Guard can be bought for 10 gems.  A player can also attack while Village Guard is up without losing them.  A player can dismiss the Village Guard at any time.  If one buys a shield from the shop, their active Village Guard will be dismissed.

A Personal Break system is currently in use where players who have stayed online in the game for an extended period will be forced to take a break, so other villages have a chance to attack. This system will also be changed to allow for regular defending and attacking.

Here are the changes stated by Anoushka(Supercell staff) on their Supercell forum:

  • A player is forced offline for 6 minutes after 3 hours of cumulative online time (or Village Guard time) without shield
  • This Personal Break 3-hour limit is only reset after getting a shield, or in some special cases covered below
  • Buying the 2-hour Village Guard from the Shop will extend a player's current Personal Break 3-hour limit by 2 hours
  • The Personal Break 3-hour limit for online players is paused during server maintenance, but not reset

There are mixed emotions about the new changes. Some feel that the changes will not be good for their gameplay while others are looking forward to the new changes. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments below.
