Netflix certainly had its work cut out for them when they renewed the A&E series of Longmire, which was cancelled after 3 seasons, in spite of serious cliffhangers.  Season 4 was released to Netflix with much praise, and it was renewed for Season 5 shortly thereafter.  The events that have transpired in Season 5 have given fans a lot of wonder on what is in store for Season 6, and this is what is known about Longmire Season 6 release date and news.

Spoilers for Longmire Season 5

Season 5 of Longmire started on a high note as Walt (Robert Taylor) and Donna (Ally Walker) were about to spend some romantic time together, and then they were shot at.  Then Donna was kidnapped, and it looked like she could have been dead, but Walt managed to rescue her.

Walt and Donna broke up, which meant that he was free to pair up with Vic (Katee Sackhoff).  There was even a scene where Vic kisses Walt on his hospital bed.  This could have gone somewhere, but didn't.  Then it turns out that Vic is pregnant, but who is the father?

While there were some good stand-alone episodes this season, but a large running plot as well.  There was an issue with an Irishman who was dealing heroin in Absaroka county.  Apparently, this salesman was heavily connected to the mob, and there was that terrible moment where he is taken from Ferg (Adam Bartley) at gunpoint while on a routine escort.

Then there is the issue with Henry (Lou Diamond Phillips) who has been taking up the mantle of Hector, a Native American figure of justice.  He has been working closely with Officer Mathias (Zahn McClarnon) on being this legend, but it doesn't take too long before it bites Henry in the you-know-what.

However, Henry realizes that the mob has presence in the county thanks to Malachi Strand (Graham Greene), and Henry and Nighthorse cast him out.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look good for Henry as Malachi captures him later.  The last we saw of Henry, he was staked down and left for dead in the hot sun.

As for Walt's daughter Cady (Cassidy Freeman), she has been working for Jacob Nighthorse (A Martinez).  Fans of the series know that Walt Longmire and Jacob Nighthorse have not gotten along, as Walt once thought that Nighthorse had killed his wife.

As it turns out, Nighthorse has been good to Cady, and she has had some difficulty dealing with a domestic violence dispute.  Worse yet, Cady had to kill in self-defense, and by the end of the series, Cady was being welcomed into tribe.

Season 5 ends with a weird vision from Cady where she sees Walt as a cowboy, and there is a lot of Indian imagery as well.  In fact, the whole series seems to be leading up to some kind of old western showdown, as illustrated by the conflict that Walt and Henry had in the last few episodes.   Longmire always had a vibe of a western taking place in modern times, and it is about to go full Clint Eastwood on us.

What doesn't seem to be happening on Longmire is this civil suit that is being brought against Walt.  It is revealed at the end that Walt is getting a temporary suspension by the mayor as a result of it.  It is possible that Walt will lose this case, which will bankrupt him.  Then the land Walt owns will be purchased and turned into a golf course.

Longmire Season 6 Release Date

It has been revealed that Longmire could last several seasons, and Season 5 certainly had enough cliffhangers to keep it going on for at least one more.  In case you are wondering why you haven't heard if Longmire Season 6 will be renewed, it is because Netflix doesn't really work that way.

Generally, Netflix waits until they know that they will have an audience, and then they announce the renewal.  It took a few weeks before Marvel's Daredevil and Jessica Jones series were formally announced.

There was such a huge demand for Season 5, I can't imagine why in the world there wouldn't be a Season 6.  Season 5 was done pretty well, and set the next season up for something darker and grittier than the series was before.
