Psalm 4:3-8 (NRSV)
But know that the LORD has set apart the faithful for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him.
When you are disturbed, do not sin; ponder it on your beds, and be silent. [Selah] Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the LORD.
There are many who say, "O that we might see some good! Let the light of your face shine on us, O LORD!" You have put gladness in my heart more than when their grain and wine abound.
I will both lie down and sleep in peace; for you alone, O LORD, make me lie down in safety.
I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.
- Isaiah 41:13 (NIV)
SUFFERING with an ear infection, I had several restless nights. I blamed the two-hour sleep intervals on the numerous medications I was taking for the infection. One night after lying awake for over an hour, I decided to get out of bed. Then I realized that my disturbed sleep was not caused from the medicines but from the many worries churning in my head.
I picked up my devotional book to read the meditation and scripture for the new day. The title of the meditation was "Trust in God's Help." By the time I had finished reading, I felt that God had led me to a solution for my restless nights.
If I turn all my worries and disturbing thoughts over to God, I can have a peaceful night's sleep. Restless nights may come again, but now I will turn them over to God, who is always near to give us peace.
Prayer: Dear Lord, when we lie down to rest for the night and our thoughts and worries will not let us sleep, help us to reach out to you to receive your wonderful peace. Amen.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
When we trust in God's promises, we can find peace.
