Though The Amazing Spider-Man 3 has been cancelled, fans are still not going down without a fight. On Monday, one such enthusiast started an online petition on Change.org in hopes that Sony will reconsider.

"We all know that Spider-Man is being rebooted again for the [Marvel Comics Universe]. But, us as fans would like to see The Amazing Spiderman 3, we loved Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn. And we'd like to see him reprise his role," petitioner Marcie Lucas wrote.

Actor Dane DeHaan played Osborn's villainous alter-ego Green Goblin in the previous installment, The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The star's film credits also include Metallica Though The Never, and Lawless. He also briefly appeared as Union soldier in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln.

In February, Marvel and Sony agreed to reboot the Spiderman film franchise. Both will be working on the still yet-to-be named reboot of the reboot.

According to Variety, the plot is definitely an origins story that will bring main protagonist Peter Parker back to high school. As such, actor Andrew Garfield will not be reprising his role as Spiderman.

Since 1999, Sony owned the rights to Spider-Man after buying the rights to the iconic hero for $7 million. Before their recent deal with Sony, Marvel wanted to buy back the licensing for Spider-Man. The deal allows Sony to keep creative control, marketing and distribution rights for Spider-Man. On the other hand, Marvel is free to pair up Spider-Man with any superhero that Disney owns.

This marks the second time the franchise has been rebooted. Though the decision was celebrated by Spiderman purists, supporters of the more recent film series were not so enthusiastic. However, it seems that Sony's decision is final.

Despite the cancellation of The Amazing Spider-Man 3, Sony plans to continue with the Sinister Six and Venom spinoff from the Spiderman universe. The studio has yet to announce when both series will begin.
