There are phablets, small tablets, and big tablets. Now, we may live to see a giant tablet courtesy of Samsung. Rumors are rife that the South Korean device maker is working on a tablet device with an 18.4-inch display. That's noticeably larger than its biggest model to date, the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2.
A new shipping log spotted by French leakster NoWhereElse.fr suggests that Samsung is testing several prototypes, seven of which are apparently the 18.4-inch model described as a tablet PC. In the leaked document, it is noted that the devices are to be destroyed once the testing & evaluation process is complete.
The document, pictured above, is reportedly obtained from an import tracker called Zauba. It indicated that the combined value of the prototypes is 226,594 Indian Rupees or around $3,550 USD. That translates to 32,371 INR for each unit (approximately $510 USD).
That price is less than what we can expect for a Samsung tablet of this size. GSM Arena pointed out that a device with a huge display can't be cheap. For reference, the 32GB version of the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 is currently available for $650 in the US. Nevertheless, the pricing may just represent how much the company spent to produce the prototypes.
Aside from the display size, the import log has not revealed any other specification for the rumored Samsung tablet. The leaked document only included the description "S.S - 18.4″ which apparently corresponds to the diagonal measurement of the screen. Unfortunately, no picture of the device has managed to surface online. Since Samsung cleverly planned to obliterate the test devices once the intended purpose is fulfilled, it may be hard for those planning to leak pictures to capture a shot of the 18.4-inch Samsung tablet.
At first, it may seem strange for Samsung to launch a tablet this big, more so if the company decides to power it with the mobile-focused Android OS. We seriously cannot imagine how people would willingly carry around an almost 20-inch device that is not a laptop.
On the other hand, an 18.4-inch Samsung tablet would be a sensible choice for media consumption. Watching movies in a device with a large display would be a great experience especially if Samsung furnish it with a 2K or 4K display resolution.
Moreover, this alleged 18-inch Samsung tablet could be a strategic move for the South Korean tech giant to counter the rumored Apple iPad Pro which will also reportedly sport a larger screen than its predecessors.
