2017 Audi A5 Specs, Design, Release Date: Spy Photos & Video of Next-Generation Prototype Captured While Testing In Germany

With the new 2016 Audi A4 preparing to make its official debut, the German car maker looks like it has already begun testing a follow-up—the 2017 Audi A5. Spy photographers caught the model in action on the back roads of Germany, giving us a better look at Audi's next-generation coupé.

The vehicle was recently captured on video wrapped in heavy camouflage while circling the infamous German Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit. The two-minute clip was uploaded on YouTube by user "MOTOR1." It shows that the upcoming A5 coupe will apparently adopt a new front and rear design, possibly integrating style elements taken from next year's Audi A4 saloon.

While the 2017 Audi A5 is covered in swirly disguise, we can see still see on the video some of its appearance underneath. At the front, there is a prominent grille and bumper bordered by sweptback headlights along the sides as well as sporty air intakes. A short trunk with an integrated spoiler is apparent at the rear. The test vehicle also has door-mounted mirrors and a stylish roofline.

Engine options will be carried over from the A4 so we can expect a range of various petrol and diesel options such as a 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder capable of developing 190 PS (140 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque, WorldCarFans.com noted. Furthermore, there might be a choice of six-speed manual, seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmissions, and eight-speed automatic, in addition to the standard front- or quattro four-wheel drive options.

Similar to the A4, the 2017 Audi A5 will ride on the automaker's MLB Evo platform and will weigh roughly 100 kg (220 lbs) less than the previous model.  The 2015 Audi Q7 was the first model to be introduced with the  MLB Evo chassis and most of Audi's roster is anticipated to transition to the new, lightweight automobile platform.

Continuing this tradition to the Audi A5, the car maker will use a broad range of standard diesel and gasoline engines to power its sports coupé, with the range-topping RS5 and the performance-minded S5 expected to join the lineup in the future.

The company is still mum about the actual release date or any other details pertaining to the 2017 Audi A5. Meanwhile, AutoGuide.com claimed in a report that Audi will begin production process for the model in August 2016. That said, we may expect the 2017 Audi A5 to go on sale in about a year's time.
