DOOM 2016 Release Date Update: Early Copies Leaked Ahead Of Launch

May 11, 2016 12:09 PM EDT

It seems that several copies of revamped shooter DOOM came out several days before the game's scheduled May 13 release date. Some gamers posted a picture on Twitter as evidence that they bought a copy. Now, here's the latest round-up of update about DOOM 2016 release date, features and rumors on the web.

One of the lucky gamers who got the early copies of DOOM is Tyler Chatham. He posted a picture on Twitter holding a copy of the game. Tech Insider reported that the picture was taken at a Target in Hollywood, CA. The website added it is highly likely that this was a mistake at a single store, and other retailers will follow the scheduled release date.

This year's DOOM is a reboot of the classic shooter series, which came out in 1993. The original version of the game is the pioneer of the first-person shooter genre. The revamped DOOM is expected to hit gaming shelves on May 13 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. However, it looks like there are copies available now in some places.

Since developer ID Software released DOOM more than 20 years ago, there are enormous improvements in the first-person shooter games. The intervening decades have witnessed improvements in graphics, mechanics, pacing and gameplay.

Alphr reported DOOM 2016 puts emphasis on speed and momentum over cover, encouraging players to face every battle. Game developers call the new feature as "push-forward combat." There's no health regeneration or cover system. Players have to kill enemies to regain health instead of take cover. As an aid, there are also health and armour pick-ups. Old-school mechanics like the double jump can also be used.

Furthermore, the new DOOM game includes campaign mode and a number of classic multiplayer modes. Players can fight enemies together in deathmatch and domination modes. In addition, there's a humans-versus-monster mode where players can transform into one of the game's various demon classes.

Interestingly, players can create their own custom maps and game modes through the map-maker tool "Doom SnapMap."

According to Bethesda's website, DOOM 2016's PS4 pre-load happens on Wednesday, May 11, at 12am ET in North America. Players should make sure that they have 50 GB free space available to install the game. Some of the game's system requirements for PC are 8 GB RAM and NVIDIA GTX 970 4GB/AMD Radeon R9 290 4GB or better.
