‘Mortal Kombat X’ DLC: Will There be a Kombat Pack 3 Release Date or Is Something Else Happening At Netherworld Studios?

Mortal Kombat X has been out for a year, and it has proven a hit with the release of Downloadable Content (DLC) that includes two Kombat Packs.  Then there was the release of Mortal Kombat XL, with Kombat Pack 1 and 2.  This leaves fans of the game wondering what could possibly be next, and there is a possibility of a Kombat Pack 3, as well as even more possibilities.

Even though fans want to know what is next, the oddest thing has appeared on Ed Boon's Twitter account.  Ed Boon is the creator of the original Mortal Kombat game, and has been the showrunner on it now.  Ed Boon's Tweet simply has one word of "Next?"  He then lists off three things that people can expect.  The first is Kombat Pack 3, the second is Mortal Kombat 11, and the last is a Shaolin Monks sequel.

At the time of this writing, the Kombat Pack 3 is winning at 44 percent, with MK11 at 27 percent with the Shaolin Monks sequel at 29 percent.  For those that don't remember, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks was an adventure game designed to appeal to the fighting game standard of Mortal Kombat fans.  It was considered a success, selling at one million copies.  It is not surprising that it made number 2 on the list of choices.

It is also not surprising that MK11 is lowest of the choices, but at least it isn't a low percentile.  If NetherRealm Studios were to create a new Mortal Kombat game, it would take years before it would ever see the light of day.  This is assuming that the game really is a step up, and not just the same code with some new characters and features added.  Yes, there are a lot of sequels to games that try this trick.

Of course, the usual video game strategy is now to release a game, and then release DLC until the next game.  There is usually a pause in between games of a few months, as it would not be wise to put out DLC for the old version when there is a new version out.  Otherwise, gamers will keep buying and playing the old version and wait longer than they should to purchase the new version.

Ed Boon's Twitter vote should end as of today, and might be over now, depending on when this post actually publishes.  However, it looks like Kombat Pack 3 is the winner, or at least a good representation of what fans actually want.

This leads to the discussion of what could possibly be in Kombat Pack 3, and honestly, the possibilities are infinite.  After all, Mortal Kombat has lately been "adopting" characters from other franchises, such as Leatherface from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series, the Alien from the Alien franchise, and Predator from the Predator movies.  Considering that Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was something that actually happened, could they steal from DC, again?

At this point, Mortal Kombat X players can only speculate what Kombat Pack 3 will have.  However, they should feel free to make suggestions of anything on Twitter or all social media.  Feel free to leave a comment here as well.
