Here’s a DIY project that video gamers with a nostalgic streak might want to indulge in: the Triforce Chest NES Mod. As a gamer, do you sometimes wish that you could roll back the years in order to make sure that you can enjoy those old school games once again? Of course, with virtual consoles and re-released titles being the norm these days (Nintendo is amazingly good at doing so with their Virtual Console collection of retro titles), that allows you to enjoy 8-bit and 16-bit titles on the big screen in your living room. What if you prefer to enjoy your games on the actual console itself? Finding a working one might be a challenge, but the older stuff have generally been built to last, so it should not be a problem.

The brainchild of the folks over at Mako Mod, the Triforce Chest NES Mod certainly lives up to its name. It will obviously carry the classic NES within as its “heart” to make everything possible, but what makes the entire mod all the more cool would be the levitating Triforce. Get out of here! What sort of wizardry is involved in this mod?

The build of the chest itself is so realistic and true to the game, that Legend of Zelda fans would certainly be able to recognize it in an instant. The functioning NES that lies within it is the true treasure, while the levitating Triforce turns the entire Triforce Chest NES Mod into a modern spectacle that is worthy to be added to any serious console collector’s collection.

One good thing about the Triforce Chest NES Mod is, it is up for sale. Needless to say, with the amount of craftsmanship going into the mod, it is going to cost a whole lot more than the NES Classic Edition. This is one custom-built console that was retailing for €355 on eBay around a dozen hours before the auction ends, and it looks as though the item has already been purchased.

You can be sure that many people would spend more time checking out the spinning Triforce on this mod compared to seeing you complete your Mario speed run. Since this is truly a one-of-a-kind NES mod, you can be sure that the next time it appears on eBay or other online auction site, it will be priced a whole lot more -- hopefully the components in the NES within will be able to last the distance.

It is always very nice to see the controller used with the Triforce Chest NES Mod has also been given the proper treatment, making the entire shebang look like one unified gaming experience.

Of course, if you are feeling more adventurous and would like to bring this particular Triforce Chest NES Mod to carry a far more modern touch complete with HDMI output and all (just be prepared to live with a shorter controller cable), then you can opt to swap the original NES out with the recently revealed NES Classic Edition that has a smaller form factor and comes with pre-loaded titles. This can only be done after November 10th, as that is when the NES Classic Edition will hit the US for $59.99 a pop.
