The All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) has asked the United Nations Security council meeting in Nairobi Kenya, to take charge of the war in Sudan and facilitate the deployment of peace keeping forces to monitor the implementation of the recently signed ceasefire agreement.

In a statement signed by the AACC General Secretary, Rev Dr Mvume Dandala, and sent to all ambassadors of the Permanent Representatives in the Security Council and representatives of the Elected Ten Delegations to the Council, the head of the 170-Member Church pan-African body asked the council to put "utmost and unequivocal pressure on all the parties of the peace process in the Sudan to find a lasting solution to the 38-year long conflict".

"We ask that the final comprehensive peace agreement be signed and its implementations be witnessed and guaranteed by the international community," the November 15, 2004 statement read in part.

The churches also called for the establishment of good governance throughout the Sudan to allow groups of the civil society to play their full part in building a culture for peace.

"We ask that the international community, through the United Nations and African Union, be mandated to provide mechanism for peace keeping and to ensure the smooth implementation of the Peace Agreement in the South and the Darfur regions respectively," Dandala said.
