Starting from 15 Jan to 17 Jan, a series of activities on ecumenical movement will be held by Hong Kong Christian Council (HKCC). The highlights include a mass symposium on ecumenical movement and Joint Holy Communion Service. These activities have prologized the whole-year Golden Jubilee celebration of HKCC in 2004.
The theme of the mentioned symposium is “Ecumenical Movement in the 21st Century: Challenges and Opportunities”. On the symposium, there will be four major keynote speeches and responses, as well as three forums with focuses on ecumenical, women and youth. Chairman of World Council of Churches (WCC), Rev. Dr. Konrad Raiser will speak on the theme topic “Ecumenical Movement in the 21st Century: Challenges and Opportunities”, while Dr. Wong Wai Ching, the Associate Professor of Modern Language and Culture from the Chinese University of Hong Kong will respond to this topic.
The second topic is “Theology of Ecumenism: Development and Reconstruction” which will be delivered by Dr. C. S. Song, Professor from California Pacific Religious College in the United States. Dr. Philip Wickeri from San Francisco Theology College will lead the discussion on the impact of Globalization on ecumenical movement. Last but not the least, Chairman of Asia Christian Conference Rev. Ahn Jae Woong will speak for the topic “Ecumenical Movement- Challenges and Opportunities in Asia”. This topic is especially beneficial for Hong Kong churches that would like to open up a more extensive mission network.
The contents of the ecumenical movement symposium vary from theoretical approach to application approach. As many religious leaders from different dominations are invited from overseas, this has provided a precious opportunity for Hong Kong Christian leaders to gain visions. This is really a remarkable event in the ecumenical history of Hong Kong Christianity.
HKCC has been highly advocating ecumenical movement in Hong Kong since its foundation. Organizing this mass symposium as one of the event in its Golden Jubilee celebration may have shown its enthusiasm in ecumenical movement. A Joint Holy Communion Service is held on 17 Jan at Truth Lutheran Church to end the symposium.
