Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone - Col. 4:6
How we express ourselves verbally speaks volume others cannot easily ignore. That is why our conversation always needs to be filled with grace, expressed in a way that demonstrates the favor that Jesus Christ has faithfully deposited in us. In Colossians, the apostle Paul instructs the believers that their conversations had to be seasoned with salt, not just filled with grace. Jesus placed on us the responsibility of being the salt of the earth, making it clear that if the salt ever lost its flavor it would be ineffective. Paul seems to echo that sentiment by stating why this was important: so that you may know how to answer everyone.
Has your conversation been graceful and seasoned, Beloved? You are the salt of the earth, the seasoning that acts as a protective shield to those in need. If your conversation is filled with anything but grace and salt, chances are you will not be effective in delivering the message of Jesus Christ. Chances are you will not know how to answer everyone who comes to you. But if the love and life of Jesus Christ are echoed from your lips into the heart of others, you will truly be an effective witness for Jesus Christ. Go ahead, change the way you speak. Add Christ’s grace and seasoning to your words.
