National Christian Council of Sri Lanka(NCCSL) called on churches to practice unity, Ecumenical News International reported on 12.
NCCSL plans to join a peace rally which is going to be held by the Council and the Roman Catholic Church in August.
"We need to be united if we are to preach unity to our divided nation. Let's give up competition in mission and cold war among ourselves," said NCCSL chairperson Anglican Bishop Kumara Illangasinghe at the Council's annual meeting held on June 7 in Colombo.
The Council also has set up common bible readings and is planning to set up common marriage, baptism and funeral service liturgies among its members. The Council's joint ecumenical team has been doing this with the Roman Catholic Church, which 80 percent of Christians attend in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is a war-torn nation which ethnic conflict has continuously swayed since 1983 when Tamil Tigers took up armed conflict against the Sinhala Buddhist majority.
Many sects from Tamil Tigers has brought guerilla wars to establish their own nation in nothern and eastern region and the wars are still going on now.
