God's Guidance

The psalmist wrote, "The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; I have a goodly heritage."

-Psalm 16:6 (NRSV)

I worked as a secretary for a doctor whose favorite saying was "with hindsight," meaning that if he had known the result of a particular course of treatment, he might have done something differently.

It is often only with hindsight, by looking back, that we see God's hand at work in our life, guiding us down a particular path. When I look back on my life, I can see instances of God's guidance. For example, I was born as the only child of an unmarried mother and was destined for adoption, but it didn't happen. As an adult, I was led to a loving, Christian husband. And I was saved from the progression of ovarian cancer because another illness led to the early discovery and treatment of the cancer.

You may be able to see instances of God's hand at work in your life too. Think about decisions that you thought were made by chance or the coincidences that led you to a particular career or relationship. There are times when we feel God has abandoned us, but acknowledging God and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us reminds us that God is always with us.
