Students from elementary through high schools gathered at their schools' at 7 a.m. today to hold the 15th annual See You At the Pole rally, a student prayer movement that began in Texas. The theme was“Ascend: Clean Hands. Pure Heart,” based on a passage from Psalm 24:3-4.

Some locations have also organized prayer rallies for tonight.

Pop Christian singer Michael W. Smith said he admires kids who can publically gather to proclaim their faith, noting that it takes "guts." Smith said he plans to attend a "See You at the Pole" event near his Tennessee home.

"It's pretty moving to see a bunch of high school kids get together and pray," said Smith. "I think it's pretty awesome."

The award-winning singer also encourages adults to support the kids.

"This is the next generation, man," he says, "and we've got to invest in these kids."
