Toronto, ON – February 8, 2010 – Who could ever have imagined the unique opportunities that the Winter Olympics would bring to Canada? On the heels of sporting triumphs, there comes a once in a lifetime opportunity for Christians to share hospitality and God’s Word.

Because of this, the Canadian Bible Society (CBS) has partnered with More Than Gold (MTG), a non-profit organization that coordinates the volunteer efforts of the Christian community for major sporting events worldwide, so that visitors and athletes will know that the Christian community is present.

Thousands of spectators will witness simple acts of service when a volunteer hands them a warm drink and engages them in spiritual conversation – offering a winter sports themed New Testament provided by the Canadian Bible Society.

CBS National Director, Ted Seres says, “I am planning to be at the Winter Olympic Games to witness the distribution of Scriptures that CBS has produced for this event. Strong partnerships with other organizations are enabling us to deliver God’s Word in the most direct, resourceful and relevant means at out disposal. It’s because of faithful supporters that we are able to produce and distribute Scripture in a format that directly benefits people’s lives at events like the Winter Olympics.”

A number of teams will help coordinate the delivery of programs across all denominational lines, and CBS has provided the following Scripture resources for distribution at the Winter Games.

30,000 New Testaments

50,000 Gospel of Mark booklets

50,000 Youth Scripture booklets

All of these resources contain testimonies of winter sports athletes and they will be distributed in hospitality kits, through open door churches, at creative and performing arts stages, and through personal conversations with crowds at public arenas and TransLink stops where wait times for transit may be up to one hour.

Karen Reed, Executive Director, MTG Canada says, “We are so deeply grateful to the Canadian Bible Society for the generous partnership they have been to the More Than Gold network. These excellent and well-designed resources are a significant contribution to the outreach efforts that have been organized.”

The Canadian Bible Society is thrilled to be at the Winter Olympics sharing God’s Word so that people from all walks of life can have it, get it, and live it!
