Boston Red Sox vs. St. Louis Cardinals World Series Game 4 Preview

The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Boston Red Sox, 5-4, on Saturday night as Busch Stadium with one of the most bizarre plays ever to end a World Series game.

Will Middlebrooks was called for obstruction on runner Allen Craig, and even as the Red Sox chased down and throw down, the game was over.

Neither of the umpires had ever seen a game end in such fashion.

Going into Game 4, St. Louis holds a two-games-to-one lead.

Cardinals will send Lance Lynn on the mound, while the Red Sox will counter with Clay Buchholz.

Lynn, 26, had 15-10 with 3.97 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 198 strikeouts in 201 2/3 innings this past regular season.

Buchholz, 29, has 12-1 with 1.74 ERA and 1.03 WHIP during the regular season, but that was when he was healthy. In the post season, he achieved a 5.40 ERA. He was supposed to pitch in Game 3 , but he admits that he hasn't recovered fully.

"Given the couple of days that I've been out so far, not a hundred percent," Buchholz said in a press conference before Game 3. "I've said it a couple of times this year, I don't think anybody, especially at this time of the season, is a hundred percent."

While no one expected the Game 3 to settle in fine prints, the real reason why Red Sox lost the game was because, for the second straight game, an ill-advised to third base took a detour to left field, allowing the Cardinals to plate the winning run. It also happened in the seventh inning of Game, where Red Sox lost 2-4, back at Fenway, with Craig Breslow tossing a throw into the seat.

Sports analysts believe that if Red Sox plan to recover and win, they must get out of their own way by ceasing all daring throws to third base.
