Popular country singer Carrie Underwood recently shared her Christian faith through the lyrics in her latest single,  "Something in the Water."

In the new song which debuted Monday, the 31 year old "American Idol" winner refers to the water of baptism and life-changing power of conversion.

"It's really kind of a joyous uplifting song about changing your life for the better,"Underwood told NBC's TODAY. "And kind of having that 'ah-ha' moment, to waking up and your life being different from that moment forward."

Included in the overtly Christian lyrics are the lines:

"There's somebody saying what I'm saying to you, Open my eyes and told me truth, He said just a little faith and it'll all get better, So I followed that preacher man down to the river and now I'm changed, And now I'm stronger."

She continues, "I was all out of hoping, all out of fight, Couldn't fight back my tears so I fell on my knees, Saying God if you're there come and rescue me, Felt love pouring down from above, Got washed in the water, washed in the blood."

The ballad ends Underwood singing a powerful rendition of "Amazing Grace."

"The song is hopefully uplifting no matter where you are on your spiritual journey," Underwood told radio DJ Cody Alan. "Hopefully, it can still just make you feel happy."

The singer has never been shy about her faith, often singing hymns such as "How Great Thou Art" and openly sharing her beliefs on national TV.

After shooting to fame in 2005 following  her first album 'Some of Hearts,' which featured the hit single 'Jesus take the Wheel,' Underwood explained how she balances country music, fame, and Christianity.

At the time, she told Esquire magazine - After I released "Jesus, Take the Wheel," people started saying, Oh, it's kind of risky. You're coming out with a religious song. And I was thinking, Really?

"I grew up in Oklahoma, I always had a close relationship with God. I never thought it was risky in the least. If anything, I thought it was the safest thing I could do."

Underwood has been the recipient of six Grammy Awards, sixteen Billboard Music Awards, eleven Academy of Country Music Awards, seven American Music Awards, five Country Music Association Awards, and many others.

"Something in the Water" was written by Carrie Underwood with Chris DeStefano and Brett James, and will be featured on her Greatest Hits: Decade #1 album due out Dec. 9.
