'Red Dead Redemption 2' Release Date and Sequel Rumors on Xbox One and PS4

May 26, 2015 08:15 PM EDT

Red Dead Redemption, and open world game set in the old west, has been considered one of the best games of all time.  There have always been rumors of a sequel in the five years since its initial release, and it is possible that Rockstar and Take Two Interactive are making one.  This is what we know about Red Dead Redemption 2 Release Date News.

According to Express, clues of Red Dead Redemption 2 are mostly based on how Rockstar is looking to hire a network programmer who "specializes in a wide range of gameplay mechanics found in a Rockstar open world game".  The candidate "would be responsible for the integration of dynamic multiplayer into all areas of gameplay in complex open-world environments".  There were more technical specifications to this job, but this upcoming project has been confirmed for the Xbox One and PS4.

This could be wishful thinking, but many are saying that the signs are pointing to a possible sequel to Red Dead Redemption.  This kind of makes sense, as the game was released exactly five years ago this week.  Most games usually have a sequel by then.  After all, Rockstar usually puts out a new version of Grand Theft Auto within that time frame.

According to Gotta Be Mobile, Rockstar has dropped hints about a sequel to the game.  At a recent "Asked and Answered" panel, the company talked about its future, and stated that "we don't always rush to make sequels, but that does not mean we won't get to them eventually".  Some of those games talked about were Bully, L.A. Noire, and Red Dead Redemption

The Latino Post reveals that Rockstar's partner with Red Dead Redemption, Take Two Interactive has recently revealed that "an unannounced AAA game will be released in the current fiscal year".  A Triple A, or AAA, game is one with the highest amount of promotion as well as the highest quality of developing, which could mean that the company is either working on a sequel to Mafia 2 or Red Dead Redemption

If you are not familiar with Red Dead Redemption, the game has sold over 12.5 million copies and won several Game of the Year awards from various gaming publications.  The game focuses in the year 1911, on a man named John Marston, a former outlaw who discovers that his wife and son are kidnapped.  The government is the one who holds his loved ones hostage, and in order to get them back, John will have to become a bounty hunter and seek out the three members of his former gang.

Players can freely roam the west, and seek out quests to help them along their way.  Of course, since this is the old west, there are many gunfights as well as lots of time on a horse.  An online multiplayer mode allows up to 16 players to engage in both cooperative and competitive gameplay.  After it was released, there was a very successful downloadable content (DLC) added where Martson had to find a cure to an infectious zombie plague in Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare

Assuming that the rumors of Red Dead Redemption are true, it might be possible to see a release date this year or the next, depending on how long it takes to get this game out.  Since E3 (the Electronic Entertainment Expo) is in mid-June, it would be the perfect time for Rockstar and Take Two Interactive to make a formal announcement of this long-awaited sequel.
