Angry Birds Movie Release Date, Trailer, and Cast; A Hit Or Miss For Rovio?

A new trailer for The Angry Birds Movie has recently been released, and soon players of the popular mobile game will get to see their favorite birds leap from the small screen to the big screen. Angry Birds was quite a popular game a few years ago, and it has spawned a lot of sequels as well as merchandise, but success can only last so long. Will the film bring some new life to Angry Birds creator Rovio? This is the latest Angry Birds Movie Release Date and News.

According to The Verge, the Angry Birds movie is a pretty big risk for Rovio, as it was revealed in March 2015 that the company's profits had fallen 73 percent in 2014. It was in October 2014 when Rovio announced that it would lay off up to 130 employees. Considering that Angry Birds 2 was just released, there must still be people on their smartphones or tablets shooting birds on a slingshot.

The trailer for the film attempts to show that the game is going to have some depth of character to it. It begins with the Red bird, the one that players start out with in the game. It appears that he is going to some anger management group or something, and there is a scene in the trailer where it seems his rage is going to boil to the surface.

Red is played by Jason Sudeikis, a very comedic actor from Saturday Night Live and the Horrible Bosses series. Along for the ride is Josh Gad as Chuck, the Yellow bird. Gad is starting to be a veteran to animation as he played Olaf in Frozen, and seems to be getting typecast as annoying sidekick. Danny McBride plays Bomb, who literally blows up when he is surprised. Peter Dinklage from Game of Thrones plays the Mighty Eagle, who, as most players know, is the one you call when you can't beat a level. Bill Hader, also of Saturday Night Live, plays the voice of the villainous pig, who will presumably attempt to steal the eggs of the bird kingdom.

There is definitely no shortage of celebrities as the imdb page lists other comic actors like Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, and Tony Hale, but not their specific role in the film. Clearly, the other birds need to be casted, like the White bird that uses its egg as a bomb. Perhaps it will be explained in the film why birds who are defending their eggs are willing to use their eggs as weapons. The preview has a glimpse of the Blue Bird that can split into three different birds, and Red literally gives this bird the boot. Clearly, Red has some issues to deal with, and it is odd to see the main character of a film, particularly one targeted at children, indulge in abusive behavior.

Expect The Angry Birds Movie to be released on May 20th, 2016. The film had better be a hit in order to bring some life back to Rovio. It has a lot of things working against it as no movie based on a video game has ever been a hit with critics. It would be interesting if The Angry Birds Movie was the first.
