Following the Washington Redskins' devastating loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 12, a lot of fans have started to question the effectiveness of Kirk Cousins as the team's starting quarterback. There have also been talks of the Redskins promoting backup Colt McCoy to replace Cousins.
Cousins has been with the Redskins since 2012 but he spent the majority of his time with the team as a backup QB. This was a bit worrisome for fans because some of them are doubtful that Cousins has the necessary skills to be the team's main passer. The athlete was able to put their minds at ease recently by stating in an interview that he has become accustomed to his role as the team's leader.
"In order to be able to [lead] you have to have played and have experience and be able to understand the offense well enough to communicate to other players," he said. "It's great to get to that point but I couldn't just walk in here my first year, or first year under Coach Gruden and be able to do that."
"Now having played a full season, I'm much more capable of being an extension of the coaching staff and I'd like to think that another year even more so. It does help."
However, during Monday's game, the Steelers were able to run through the Redskins, even though Cousins was named as the top passer of the night with 329 yards.
After the loss, some fans of the franchise started suggesting that the Redskins should change their starting quarterback. For instance, a caller on Sports Junkies suggested that McCoy should take over Cousins' role.
According to the caller, even though Cousins is a talented quarterback, he can't stand up to the pressure of facing teams that are good.
Of course, as the No. 2 quarterback, the Redskins can replace Cousins with McCoy anytime. But, the Washington franchise will probably not do that since despite the loss against the Steelers, Cousins is still a more capable player than McCoy, even though the latter has been in the NFL longer than the former.
After all, given the various franchise records that Cousins was able to set, there is a very good reason why he was named as this season's starting QB.
