There is power in your words more than you may know it. The course of your life is directed by what you speak. And what you speak is what is in the heart.

Proverbs 18:21 says that "death and life are in the power of the tongue; and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof."

A person who always speaks of lack is noticeably living in poverty; a person who always speaks negatively about others is noticeably surrounded by false friends; and a person who always speaks about failure is noticeably living in fear.

If you desire to live a victorious life, you must first therefore be wise in choosing the words that you speak.

The Huffington Post  quoted Yehuda Berg that "words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate and to humble."

This is the power of words and the tongue is the device that can bring forth life or death.

I understand that there are difficult times that come by our lives and sometimes, we can't help but speak what is exactly in the mind - doubts, fears, suspicions, and all other negativities. But Jonas Clark says "never speak your enemy's desire."

What does he mean by "enemy's desire?" As Christians, we know who the real enemy is: the thief who kills, steals and destroys (John 10:10).

And the enemy knows exactly the power of our words because God has written it in the Bible. The devil also doesn't hold any power against you because of what Jesus Christ has done.

So what the enemy does is simply feed your mind with negative things, slowly removing your faith and trust in God. And he wants you to speak those thoughts out of your mouth.

It is best that you keep your mouth shut and stay alert of the negative voices and pictures that you are hearing and seeing inside your mind.

"Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8).

So what should you do to improve the quality of your life? Speak the right words.

Here are 3 simple ways to taming your tongue:

1.       Read the Word of God daily and declare God's promises instead:

Joyce Meyer says on her website that  "the words that come out of our mouth go into our own ears as well as other people's, and then they drop down into our soul where they give us either joy or sadness, peace or upset, depending on the types of words we have spoken."

It is therefore important to know the promises of God and declare it each day to have one's mind and heart focused on the good plans of God rather than the current situations.

2.      Do not get involved in gossips.

One sure sign of a bad company is by the way they speak about others negatively.

Be wise in choosing  your companions and in entertaining pastime chats with other people so that you may not fall into the trap of believing lies against someone leading into a sin called gossiping.

James 3:6 says that "among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself."

3.      Always pray in the Spirit.

To thwart any plans of attacks from the enemy, you must always pray in partnership with the Holy Spirit for when the Spirit in you prays, it brings confusion to the devil because he does not understand the language of God.

Remember that your words carry a power when you speak it. What are you going to choose to speak today?
