Photo: Wonder Woman / Warner Bros. "/>Following the impressive box office debut of “Wonder Woman” with a whopping $100.5 million, director Patty Jenkins has confirmed that sequel will be in the works for Gal Gadot to take up the lasso and shield for the second time around.
“Wonder Woman” puts forward the backstory of the Amazonian warrior Diana Prince, also known as the Princess of Themyscira; the Warner Bros. film has gone on to become the first successful superhero movie with a female lead, as noted by The Hollywood Reporter.
Set during World War I, the opening scene for “Wonder Woman” features a modern-day Diana receiving a photograph through her mail. After arriving at her office in Paris, she takes a look at the black-and-white image, which shows her in full Wonder Woman outfit. She is standing with Capt. Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) and the other troop members in what is seemingly a battle-damaged city. On the back of the picture is a note from Bruce Wayne aka Batman himself.
With contractual obligations to create another “Wonder Woman” film, Jenkins has already opened up about where she thinks Diana should be headed next.
“The story will take place in the U.S., which I think is right,” she said to Entertainment Weekly. “She’s Wonder Woman. She’s got to come to America. It’s time.” There have been no comments from Warner Bros. about the future of the “Wonder Woman” franchise, but fans are expecting that Jenkins will be keen to return and direct the second movie, having established a close bond with Gadot and the rest of the cast and crew.
“I’m not a big obligation person when it comes to art. You want to do a movie like this because you believe in it,” she said. “Then I had this revelation in the middle of the night: this is your dream cast, you’ve created a character that you love and you can say anything you want in the world right now.”
While “Wonder Woman” focused on the past that is World War I, “Wonder Woman 2” is expected to be "contemporary-set," although Jenkins told Uproxx that "the plan" is to concentrate on the past. "I’d like to bring her a little farther along into the future and have a fun, exciting storyline that is its own thing," she said to the Toronto Sun.
According to MTV, there could be two possible settings- World War II in the 1940s, owing to the fact that William Moulton Marston made the Wonder Woman character in 1941; or in the 1970s, as tribute to the classic series starring Lynda Carter. Regardless of setting, Jenkins admits she is excited to work on “Wonder Woman 2” because of Diana’s beautiful story that should be shared to all.
“Then I realized that Wonder Woman 2 is its own great movie. I made Wonder Woman. Now I want to make Wonder Woman 2. It’s a beautiful story to tell, an important time to tell it and with people that I love,” the director explained.
“Wonder Woman,” starring Gadot, Chris Pine, and Robin Wright, is currently playing nationwide.
