The members of the Council of Anglican Provinces of Africa held a Mission and Evangelism Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, where they renewed the continent’s dedication to God, April 12-15, 2004. Following the conference, the keynote speaker and president of CAPA, the Archbishop Peter Akinola, announced that the African dioceses would refuse any funding from Western Anglican dioceses that condone homosexuality. Additionally, he gave the U.S. branch of the Anglican Communion – the ECUSA – 3 months to repent and denounce the consecration of the openly gay Gene Robinson in one of its dioceses. Akinola also challenged the African church to commit themselves to a five-year evangelism strategy.
