Students Join Summer Intensive Biblical Language Instruction

The University of Chicago Divinity School will offer intensive biblical language courses that offer students an opportunity to learn the vocabulary, grammar, syntax, and the style of Biblical Hebrew and Koine Greek, from August 30 to September 17, 2004.

The curriculum will build basic skills in languages of the Hebrew Bible and New Testament, while students learn the vocabulary, grammar, and syntactical constructions for three weeks.

Courses include Introductory Biblical Hebrew I, taught by Steven Sacks, and Elementary Koine Greek I, by Janet E. Spittler.

Students will also have the opportunity to practice on pronunciation, recognition of pattern, word formation, learning of vocabulary, and skills in translating sentences. Students are expected to spend approximately three hours in study each night and weekend.

Divinity School’s Bible Area faculty will present workshops on selected Thursday or Friday afternoons, and introduce students to topics, such as rabbinic interpretation, exegetical techniques.
