Sep 12, 2014 12:46 AM EDT

Sony's Xperia Z3 is coming to T-Mobile, while a rumor suggests that Verizon will sell a variant of the new smartphone.

On Wednesday, Sept. 3, the Japanese tech giant said that T-Mobile will be the first U.S. carrier for the Xperia Z3. The announcement was made on the same date as the official Xperia Z3 unveiling, just two days short of the IFA 2014 tradeshow in Berlin. IFA is scheduled to end this Wednesday, Sept. 10.

Shortly after Sony's announcement, T-Mobile confirmed that it was getting the new device via a press release posted on its site. The public statement also said that T-Mobile is stocking the Sony Xperia Z3 in fall 2014.

"T-Mobile is lining up a killer hardware portfolio for fall with a selection that gives customers every opportunity to find the perfect device," the company's press release explained. Besides T-Mobile, no other major U.S. carrier has been confirmed to be receiving the new phone.

Still, Verizon may be getting the Xperia Z3V variant, according to alleged official documents leaked to PC Magazine. Nonetheless, the report said that Verizon could not be reached for comment.

On the same day as the Sony unveiling event, YouTube subscriber Des Smith posted a video of himself un-boxing a supposed Xperia Z3. The T-Mobile logo is clearly marked on the top right-hand corner of the packaging.

Even though Sony has given the European pricing information, the mobile device manufacturer has yet to confirm the U.S. starting price. However, this may change with the imminent arrival of the Xperia Z3 to T-Mobile.

Sony Xperia Z3 Specs

To date, the Xperia Z3 is considered to be Sony's thinnest smartphone at 7.3mm thick and 153g in weight. Many users have reported that the phone has particularly strong glass, giving it a robust and solid feel. The mobile device is also dust-resistant, and will tolerate submersion in up to 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes. Even so, consumers are strongly advised to avoid putting the device in contact with liquid.

In the area of aesthetics, the Xperia Z3 sports a 5.2-inch screen with 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution. Under the hood, the phone has the 2.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, along with 3GB RAM. Also, the mobile device connects to the 4G network, and has Bluetooth 4.0 support.

Regarding internal storage, the Xperia Z3 can hold up to 16 GB of data. An additional 128 GB can be stored with the help a microSD card slot. Like its predecessor, the phone has a 20.7-megapixel camera with an ISO rating up to 12,800. For clearer images, the Xperia Z3 can be mated to the 25mm G lens. The mobile device also features a 2-megapixel rear camera for the selfie-addicts.

Perhaps the more intriguing aspect of the Xperia Z3 is that it can connect remotely to the PS4. Gamers will still need to connect the phone to the standard PS4 controller while running the console. In theory, this allows consumers the convenience with playing games remotely.

The Xperia Z3 has the 3100mAh Lithium-Ion battery, which Sony claims can run two days without charge. At this time, the device comes installed with Android 4.4 KitKat operating system.
